Anxiety Disorders and Statistics(1)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)- Affects 6.8 million adults, or 3.1% in the US, of which only 43.2% are receiving treatment. GAD often co-occurs with major depression.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - PTSD affects 7.7 million adults, or 3.5% of the U.S. population. PTSD afflicts veterans: 31% of Vietnam veterans, 10% of Gulf War (Desert Storm) veterans, 11% of veterans from the war in Afghanistan. Rape is the most likely trigger of PTSD: 65% of men and 45.9% of women have developed this disorder.

Panic Disorder (PD) - Affects 6 million adults, or 2.7% of the U.S. population. Women are twice as likely to be affected as men.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - OCD affects 2.2 million adults in the US. The average age of onset is 19, with 25% of cases occurring by age 14. One-third of adults first experienced OCD symptoms in childhood.

Social Anxiety Disorder - Affects 15 million adults, or 6.8% in the U.S. 36% of people with social anxiety disorder report experiencing symptoms for 10 or more years before seeking help.

Major Depressive Disorder(MDD) - The leading cause of disability in the US for people ages 15 to 44. MDD affects more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the population. While MDD can develop at any age, the median age at onset is 32.5 years old. The average age of onset is 31 years old.

Calming with Cannabinoids and Terpenes

Serious clinical anxiety disorders affect at least 40 million Americans. The true number could be twice as high because so many people do not seek treatment. (2) By counting adults suffering from moderate or persistent stress along with those suffering with other types of mental disorders such as depression, the numbers point to a societal problem that is rampant.

Millions of people rely on prescription drugs such as Benzodiazepines to alleviate anxiety. These drugs may be helpful initially for managing acute stress episodes but as dependence turns into addiction the problems are compounded. Statistics point to a 67% increase in anti-anxiety drug use in the US. Overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines have quadrupled. The use of this type of medication invites an addiction crisis that can easily rival the current overuse of opiates.

Clinical findings have shown that when anxiety levels are heightened, there are corresponding reduced levels of endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). By supplementing with 2-AG’s cannabinoid equivalent, CBD, receptors are activated in the brain to lower anxiety levels. In addition, receptors like 5-HT1A, that are critical in reducing anxiety states, are more responsive when a full spectrum of cannabinoids are introduced into the body. (3)

CBD that is enhanced with potent terpenes such as 8-Cineole b-Ocimene, a-Pinene, b-Pinene, d- Limonene, Linalool, Myrcene and Terpinen-4-ol seem to positively target the anterior ventral cingulate cortex (pain perception) and the prefrontal cortex (cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making and social behavior) to support calming and returning homeostatic balance. (4)

Independent brain imaging studies showed that CBD can normalize brain activity in regions that have been modified in Panic Disorder patients such as the medial and left temporal lobes, prefrontal cortex and insula, regions. (5) Research in neurology and cannabis therapies is ongoing with hopes to address powerful and life altering diseases like schizophrenia. While researchers have yet to declare that CBD rich full spectrum hemp oil is a cure, they are reporting that users are finding considerable symptom abatement without side effects or addiction issues. (6)

Research has also discovered that CBD supplementation leads to a significant decrease in scores that measure the severity of general anxiety disorder. It is likely that to restore balance, compounds within full spectrum hemp oil mediate certain areas of the brain by decreasing activation in the “para hippocampal gyrus” (memory encoding and retrieval) while increasing activation in the right posterior “cingulate gyrus” (emotion formation, processing, learning, and memory). (7)

It has become clear that taking a dose of hemp oil daily can be key to reducing the power of stress and anxiety. It’s an easy, accessible way to feel more relaxed and uplifted, while inviting overall health, well-being and the joys that life can offer. It has the power to change your mind.

It is not surprising that the second leading reason people take cannabinoid rich hemp oil is to control the negative effects of their anxiety or stress, and the resulting ANXIETY physical and mental issues that accompany it. (4)
