Cheryl Tiegs, Beauty Without Boundaries
She's been called the "Queen of the Supermodels", and at 56, Cheryl Tiegs still rules. Her reign started nearly forty years ago when she debuted at age 16 as a cover girl. One of the most photographed women in the world, Cheryl graced the covers of Glamour, Seventeen and Elle before graduating to high fashion and landing on the covers of Vogue and Bazaar. Her big splash came in 1970, when she made her first of three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Covers. In addition, Cheryl has been on the cover of Time Magazine three times, most notably when she was named "The All-American Model." And she made a little pink bikini famous in one of the highest selling posters of all time.
After all of her success, she hasn't rested on her laurels. Recently, Cheryl returned to her Sports Illustrated roots, appearing in their 40th Anniversary Swimsuit Issue and was inducted in their Swimsuit Hall of Fame. On a recent Oprah appearance celebrating the issue, Cheryl said, "You would think that one of these days I would hang up my swimsuit." But Tiegs isn't likely to do that anytime soon, and with good reason. Cheryl looks and feels fantastic. "I made a choice not to let myself go. It's an ongoing process. You can't just sit on the couch and hope you'll look good and stay fit. You have to choose to take care of yourself."
Finding the time for that care isn't always easy. Cheryl Tiegs is a dedicated mother, as well as an in-demand model. She has also been doing guest appearances, speaking engagements and hosting television shows. Cheryl is known as a groundbreaker, not only in her modeling career, but also with her business decisions. She was the first model to break into massive retail with her "Cheryl Tiegs" line of clothing and accessories. Bringing in $1 billion in its ten-year span, Cheryl proved to the skeptics that her choice to go with a national chain was the right move. Many others have followed in her footsteps. Cheryl is now blazing trails in skincare. Her latest business venture, a new line of beauty products called Ageless Woman®, brings the latest in skincare science and technology. With products like Deep Wrinkle Relaxer and ingredients like Rejuvacell, Cheryl is offering her "secret weapons" to women of the world.
"I think beauty has no age boundaries. And that's what Ageless Woman is about; taking care of yourself with products that enhance your appearance and help you feel and look beautiful. I think taking care of yourself is very important. You can't just wash with soap and water and do nothing else and expect to look radiant. Science is making new discoveries all the time. We have to take advantage of what science has come up with, treat ourselves to technology. And the results are amazing."
Of course, women are turning to science now more than ever before. Many are taking drastic steps to look younger. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2002, over 1.5 million Americans removed wrinkles with doctor-administered injections. These procedures cost anywhere from $300-900 per visit, and can result in unwanted side effects.
"I did try Botox* and it changed my expression. I didn't look like myself, which was kind of a strange experience. And I find them to be wildly expensive for something that is only temporary. It's simply not for me."
Cheryl found an alternative to the painful and costly Botox* injections called Deep Wrinkle Relaxer, perhaps the most amazing and innovative product in her Ageless Woman line. Deep Wrinkle Relaxer is a lightweight, powerful serum that is applied under your moisturizer. Not only does it reduce deep lines, it makes your skin feel baby soft. Tiegs strongly recommends the Ageless Woman® Deep Wrinkle Relaxer because it is a topical solution; there are no needles or numbness to contend with. "I would rather do something topically. I use it in the morning and at night religiously, and it's made a huge difference. After a month of using it, I definitely noticed a more youthful appearance. The lines have diminished and my skin feels incredibly soft."
Through her Ageless Woman® line, Tiegs is committed to enhancing one's mind, body and spirit by offering a collection of natural products to meet the changing needs of today's modern woman. Cheryl believes that while you're not able to change your chronological age, you can ignore that number and focus on doing things that help you look and feel your best.
"One of my pet peeves is when people walk up to me and say, 'It's easy for you, you were born that way.' Well, DNA only has so much to do with it. I could have chosen to let myself go at any time. And in fact, when I was in my early 20s, I was about 30 pounds overweight and was sent home from a photo shoot because I couldn't fit into the clothes. That was an awful experience, but it taught me a lesson. I had a choice to make. At that point, I could have thrown in the towel and kept gaining weight, but, instead I chose to take care of myself, and that's when I started learning about exercise and diet. When I say 'diet', I don't mean deprivation, but the food choices you make to keep you fit and healthy. Fitness and diet go hand in hand. You can't expect great results from working out hard and eating nothing but junk food. Nutrition is just as important as exercise. And your skincare regimen is just as important as your fitness routine when it comes to looking and feeling your best."
Looking and feeling your best isn't just working on your outward appearance to Cheryl. She also concentrates on her inner well-being. Part of her approach has been adopting a stress free attitude, which she has developed through a daily meditation ritual she's dubbed her 'Hour of Power'. "It isn't always an hour, sometimes it is 20 minutes or half an hour. Taking exactly an hour isn't important, what is important is taking the time to be still. I close the door, shut the blinds and turn off the phone-it's my hour. My HOP, as my son calls it, keeps me calm and gives me energy."
Cheryl puts a lot of effort into looking and feeling young and healthy. But it is that effort that she says helps her embrace her age. "I'm 56, and each year just keeps getting better! I think age gives you wisdom and a sense of calm that is empowering. I know that everything is going to work out, because I've been through the bumps in the road and have endured the little hurricanes that life brings. I've come to learn that at the end of the day, things will all work out and I've found a lot of peace in that."
