5 Ways To Use...Honey

There are more than 300 unique flavors and colors of honey in the United States. The variety comes from the vast array of blossoms the honeybee pollinates. The diversity of honey sources includes clover, orange blossoms, eucalyptus, black berry and acacia. In general, lighter colored honeys are mild in flavor; while darker honeys are usually more robust in flavor.

Queen Anne of England used honey to pamper and treat her famously magnificent hair. This secret was so closely guarded that it became public knowledge only after her death. No matter which honey appeals to you, there are a variety of uses:

Facials. A honey facial is a great way to soften and nourish dry skin. Mix 1 part honey with 10 parts warm water. Stir until honey is dissolved. Smooth mixture on face. Allow to soften and tighten for 20 minutes. Rinse face with warm water. Pat dry. Honey Facials can reduce dryness, wrinkles and acne, and give your skin a radiant glow. The facial mixture may also be used for other dry areas such as elbows, knees, etc.

Hay Fever. Honey has long been known to dissolve mucus and the grains of pollen that it contains have a desensitizing effect that over time make it helpful for the relief of allergies. Try to consume honey that is harvested locally for best results.

Wound Dressing. Applied to a minor cut or abrasion, honey has the ability to draw out excess water from the tissues and reduce swelling. It also contains a germ-killing substance called inhibine which helps prevents any further infection. Spread the honey directly on the wound and cover lightly with sterile gauze. Try it on chapped lips too!

Relief from respiratory ailments. To soothe inflamed lungs and airways caused by asthmas and bronchitis, mix 1 tsp. of finely chopped thyme with a little honey. Consume the mixture orally to relieve wheezing and coughs.

Relieve insomnia. To promote a rejuvenating sleep and calm mind, try a honey bath. Put 2 oz. of honey in a glass and add 5 drops of lavender oil. To help with the consistency, heat it by placing the glass in a bowl of warm water. Mix the solution into your hot bath water and prepare to relax.
