Are you inspired to join the 3,000+ plus riders on the California AIDSRide next year? Do you have a passion to help animals but allergies stop you from volunteering at the local animal shelter? Are you wondering if anyone is going to want your polyester shirt collection? Have no fear; the answers are here.
What should I give to Goodwill?
Make sure the item is usable. A lot of stuff comes to thrift stores stained and/or broken. The point is not to give just anything. As a general rule you should only donate those items in good to excellent condition.
- Make sure clothing has no holes, rips, tears, odors or stains. Most thrift stores do not wash clothing before putting them on the racks.
- If your item is oversized call for a pickup.
- Test all electrical appliances. Don't assume that the purchaser will have the money to repair it or that the thrift store will check to see if it works before selling it.
- Remember to get your itemized receipt. Donations to thrift stores are tax deductible.
I'd love to get in shape and a friend suggested that I join the AIDSRide. What should I expect?
If you are thinking about committing to a fundraising event like the AIDSRide or Avon 3-Day Event keep in mind that it will take more money and time than you think -- but you can do it.
- You will have several expenses when entering these events like postage for your pledge letters, appropriate gear, equipment and gym time. (Keep your receipts -- some of these expenses are tax deductible.)
- You will enjoy the event if you train and don't wait until the last possible minute. Go on a practice run, ride or walk and see how you fare and then plan your training accordingly. If you've never trained for an athletic event before, keep in mind that it takes repetitive, challenging and time-consuming exercise.
- Be aware that your passion for the cause may not always be as strong as those around you. When asking for money be politely persistent - follow-up on those that said they would donate without alienating those that did not respond to your request.
How do organizations use their volunteers?
Many organizations rely on a core of volunteers in order to keep operation expenses down and this is why they are so valuable.
- There is a job for everyone. If you love animals but are allergic to their dander, then see if a shelter needs some administrative help. A volunteer coordinator will try to match a person's skills with the non-profit's needs.
- Keep in mind that some training maybe required before starting. For instance if you want to be a part of a suicide prevention hotline, you need to learn to deal appropriately with these calls.
- Some organizations invite you to bring your kids along. This is an excellent way to introduce your children to charity.
Whether on a 7-day bike ride, working in a soup kitchen or making copies, your contribution to a non-profit organization is always welcome. Bring along your sense of adventure and be open to new experiences and know that your contribution is invaluable.
