Giving charity with clarity

So you're not a dotcom millionaire, but you'd still love to give -- but to whom, how and how much? Many of us would love to make a contribution to a charity regardless of our income but are unsure how to go about it.

Lygia Gordon, a member of the University of San Francisco development team has some advice on giving:

What to give:
Money, and while you're living. Yes, we know that your son Hector's clothing is taking up too much room in your attic, but give them wisely. If you would like to donate items, please give them to a charity who requests them. For instance, Goodwill will take your clothing and sell them to the public in order to make money for their clients. They have the man power to sort through every bag. However, disaster relief rely on volunteer man power, so if possible, give money. Often large organizations have a relationship with large department stores and will take your donation and buy whatever is needed. If you are unable to give money consider volunteering.

How to find an organization you want to give to:
Giving money is a personal and tough choice. Give to that organization allied with a cause you find important to you. If making a choice is hard for you then giving to an umbrella organization would be good for you. United Way is an organization that collects money and then gives it to those organizations under it's umbrella. You can also search online for an organization at National Charities Information Bureau or at The American Institute of Philanthropy.

Know your charity
Ask your chosen charity for some information since they are obligated to provide it. Get the exact name of the organization and it's purpose. You often will find a written mission statement. This should clearly state the goals, and purpose of the organization.

What to expect when giving:
Once you have sent your money to your favorite charity you should receive a receipt that complies with the IRS requirements. Keep this slip of paper in case of an audit. The deadline for giving is December 31st.

How do I know my money is being spent wisely?
Many organizations, if they have the money to produce one, will send you a glossy annual report. In it you will find a breakdown of how much is spent on administrative costs versus the "client". Non-profits strive to spend as little as possible on salary and administrative cost so that as much money as possible can go towards their mission. The perfect ratio? No more than 40 percent in salary and administrations costs is considered desirable. It will depend on the organization.
