Q: Do you have to be a vegetarian to practice yoga?
A: The body always suffers when you make food into a religion. People absorb nutrients in different ways and have different needs. Each person is unique in his or her chemical make-up. Listen to your body! It will tell you what food it needs. Most yogis and yoga practitioners are vegetarian for humanitarian and/or health reasons. But don't forget, there were great Tibetan yogis who were most likely omnivores and Native American medicine men always blessed their food and asked for forgiveness for killing the animal. For the medicine man, eating the animal made the two become one in spirit. Sometimes we must retrain the body to seek clean, fresh and wholesome foods.
