Q: I read your book and was very inspired...as with many other wonderful authors. But I just haven't had that "light bulb" moment Oprah always talks about. I am a mother of three and a wife of a police officer for the last 12 years and I am now 32. Five years ago I discovered I have a bit of talent for hand painting. But I lack motivation and inspiration. I feel I could be very successful at my painting, but can't seem to get over my fear and roller coaster depression! I am a survivor of extreme physical, emotional and sexual abuse and I'm starting to think this may have something to do with my fear of success. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your time!!!

A: Dear Anne Marie,
I'm glad that you found inspiration from "Unstoppable." You mentioned that you haven't had that "light bulb" moment and that you've discovered that you have a talent for hand painting. There is a difference between being good at something and having a passion for it. The fact that you're lacking motivation and inspiration might indicate that hand painting is not your passion.

If you are passionate about hand painting but just lack direction, I suggest the following:

  1. Identify your specific objective for hand painting. For example, do you eventually want to make it a full-time business, make additional income, or simply hand paint for your personal enjoyment.
  2. Depending on your objective, you'll want to put a plan in place. For example, if you want to turn it into a full-time business, you'll need to identify what knowledge, resources or skills you'll need to turn it into a profitable business. One way to help you learn about those requirements is to talk to people who are doing exactly what you want to do.
  3. Next, put together a plan of action. You can do so easily by taking your goal and breaking it into smaller steps. Then arrange the steps in priority order and write dates next to each step indicating when it must be accomplished to meet your ultimate objective. A clear, methodical approach will help you move steadily forward, without danger of being overwhelmed by the ultimate goal. Once you have your plan in place, commit to taking at least one action every single day towards your goal. In doing so, you'll build momentum and turn your dream into an unstoppable reality.
