Get Gorgeous with Grapes

In the days of Cleopatra, women applied the slush from the bottom of wine barrels directly onto their skin as a regular part of their facial regime. Others who worked diligently stomping grapes at French and Italian wineries swore that the little fruit smoothed the skin on their feet.

Years later, the beauty industry is embracing these age-old traditions and saying "cheers" to the sweet berries, by offering up a variety of grape-based skincare products. But don't expect a beauty buzz from these new "wine lines." You won't find fermented grape juice in soaps, scrubs and creams. Instead, grapeseed oil and extracts are being added, due to their anti-aging antioxidants and skin-beautifying properties.

The extraordinary power of the grape has resulted in dozens of beauty enhancing potions, even "wine spas," where you can enjoy fine grapes topically as well as internally. Check out these "wine lines" and spa treatments fresh from the vine.

Roman Coppola, son of the Godfather himself (Francis Ford) launched Uvavita (meaning Grape Life), a grapeseed line of creams, exfoliators and masks made from left over grapes from the family's vineyard in Northern California. Roman's sister Sofia is a fan of the Exfoliating Dead Sea Mud Mask.

Northern California's Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, where Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey visit, offers vine-inspired treatments like the Champagne Facial and the Wappo Harvest Kur, which includes a soak in a bubbly bath, a warm grapeseed mud wrap, and massage -- like you need to be more relaxed after a couple of days of wine tasting.

Paris-based Caudalie distributes worldwide and offers a full line of grapeseed products including soaps, bath gels, shampoo, and new anti-aging face firming serum, Vinolift. Caudalie also runs La Vinotherapie, located near Bordeaux, France. The "wine spa" offers a full list of juicy services including the Crushed Cabernet Body Scrub, Sauvignon Massage, and Honey and Wine Wrap, a unique bath which takes place in a barrel of spring water mixed with fresh grapes and essential oils.

Popular French cosmetic company Lancôme, has also plunged into the wine beauty biz with its introduction of Vinefit, an energizing face moisturizer with SPF 15.

Elizabeth Arden's Ceramide Herbal 12 capsules contain 12 plant ingredients including grapeseed oil. The formula helps to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
