Life is stressful, one way to cope...go fish?
They are in the offices of busy professionals around the world, keep hungry patrons patient and entertained while waiting for a table at top restaurants, (most are seafood joints, go figure) ... AND bring a little serenity into many happy homes.
Although you can't snuggle up to them and they won't jump all over you when you get home from work, for some reason people find that fish make lovable pets. A recent study showed that 7 out of 10 aquarium owners claimed that having fish in their home or office calmed and relaxed them-- reducing stress, anxiety and even lowering blood pressure.
Having your own aquarium can be very therapeutic and you don't need a big amount of space or a big budget to enjoy the benefits, just a few pointers to get you hooked.
Start small: Large wall aquariums housing hundreds of sea creatures have fascinated us all; these are not for the beginner. Start out with a 15-gallon fresh water tank. Saltwater tanks require too much care and can be very expensive to maintain.
Décor: Of course you want your fish to reside in style. Get some colorful gravel for the tank's bottom, even add a couple of decorative pieces, but be sure to keep it simple. (Fish tend to be minimalists)
Don't clear out the fish store: Start with only a few fish and gradually add more every few weeks. Be sure they are compatible with one another. (Just ask the pet store)
Keep it clean: A clean tank=happy and healthy fish. Be sure to clean the tank every few weeks.
Before you head out to buy, be sure you are committed. If it's a little much for you, consider an aquarium screen saver instead. (Enjoyable, yet no fuss) There is also a computer software program developed by PC Week Labs called "El-Fish." This "Zen-ware" program let's you design your very own 3D aquarium intended to bring harmony and balance via your computer.
