Calm Waters
Meditating Your Troubles Away

You don't remember this, but the most comforting, relaxing and stress-free moments you ever experienced happened while you were floating -- in your mother's womb. Not since before you were born have you been at such peace with yourself and your surroundings. And Floating has been rediscovered as one of the premiere methods of meditation, since its power to transcend the boundaries of body and mind are unquestionable.

Modern day floating takes place in a floatation tank, developed by a neurophysiologist who was interested in the origin of the brain's conscious activity. The tank eliminates environmental stimuli including sound, light and gravity and allows the mind to begin a journey of self-exploration. Floating is used for:

  • Reducing stress by promoting deep relaxation and mind and body awareness.
  • Improving athletic performance. It also may speed the healing process by decreasing production of lactic acid and adrenaline while increasing production of endorphins. This in turn accelerates recovery, relives pain, and boosts immune functions.
  • Isolating the outside world and forcing us to enter into our "inner world," where we can explore our true mental state and emotions in a safe environment.
  • Improving circulation and the distribution of oxygen and nutrients -- which reduces blood pressure and heart rate and lowers oxygen consumption.
  • The tanks are egg-shaped and a little larger than a twin size bed. Fresh air is pumped into the tank through an air-ionizing circulation system. Filled with water and Epsom salts, which make the body bouyant, the tanks become a cradle with the body suspended by warm water at 93.5 degrees. The water temperature is designed to eliminate the ability of the floater to feel the difference between air and water, allowing complete ease of mind and body.

It's safe to fall asleep in the tank, but a true floating experience involved allowing your mind to release itself from body awareness and concentrate on its own thoughts. With no outside stimuli, your mind will create its own world for you to enjoy, almost as if you were dreaming while awake. The mind is not familiar with sensory reduction and will look to control three-dimensional reality. With your ears under water the brain will search out sound (breathing and heartbeat) and try to amplify it. Whatever you decide to focus on will become larger than it is because without a visual indication you lose your sense of order.

Many people find they can feel certain areas of tension in their body voluntarily release the grip of everyday stress. Floaters swear by a strange euphoria that comes over them as they become one with the universe in their watery cocoons.
